For 40 years the Victoria Law Foundation has successfully conducted a week-long event aimed to demystify the legal system and make vital legal information accessible to all. This event is called Law Week and held annually. The foundation is guided by the principle that Victorians need access to important information about their legal rights and responsibilities. Due to COVID-19, Law Week 2020 utilised digital resources, providing free access to webinars, video interviews, phone helplines, virtual tours, podcasts, and more. Altogether there were 100 free events provided by more than 60 organisations.
In her Law Week message, Sally Cap, the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, noted that the majority of newly arrived Australians found attempts to understand legal processes overwhelming. Translationz hopes to help bridge this gap in understanding and accessibility. In Translationz’ continual effort to enable communication, empower relationships and make a difference in people’s lives, we provided free on-demand phone interpreting for law firms and community legal centers throughout Law Week.
There were highly qualified legal interpreters and NAATI professionals in 31 languages ready to take the calls via our fast, easy and efficient IVR platform.
One example of Translationz’ service was to the law firm Madison Marcus. The lawyer Maryam Mekhail dialled Translationz’ 1300 telephone number where our friendly operators picked up the telephone call. Maryam identified herself as a Law Week participant and within less than a minute Translationz connected Maryam and her client to the requested NAATI qualified language interpreter with legal experience. We asked Maryam for her feedback and she responded by saying that the connection to an interpreter was fast and the interpreter was professional.
“It was a useful option given that it’s not always the case that the client can access interpreter services that readily.” Overall the service was very successful.
