Interpreting services. The communication of one language to another. The aim these services seek to provide for clients is a simple one: to allow our clients to be fully understood by others.

As with anything in practice, the difficulty in service delivery can be rapidly compounded by everyday factors, just as even in regular conversation between speakers of the same language, anyone can be prone to errors in speech or meaning.

Whether it is the use of idioms, colloquialisms, misunderstandings of words and their use, the constant evolution of language, or some combination of one or all the above misinterpretations are commonplace in our day-to-day lives.

Interpreters are often placed between these everyday communication issues and asked to decipher the intent and meaning behind what is communicated. If that alone does not impress you, it should, because the challenge does not end there. On top of the regular misunderstandings that plague communication between people, our team and interpreters must also account for the differences in linguistic nuances between two languages, and even this still does not fully capture the extent of the challenges they face on a daily basis.

In the professional landscape interpreting services are utilised most often by various industry sectors. The medical and the legal industries numbering highest on that list.

If you have not, I strongly recommend taking the time to at least once, sit in on a public court hearing. Unlike some of my own favourite law-adjacent shows, such as Boston Legal or Suits, the reality of the legal industry is that there is a vast and exhausting realm of legal terminology, jargon, and specific methods of writing and speaking that are often intentionally constructed in an ambiguous way so that they could reasonably be incorporated into a decision at a later date if the need came to rise. Sitting in at a court hearing might be the closest any of us, thank goodness, ever come to being confronted by these terms and conditions.

Hi! My name is Elisa Di Mario. I may have been born in Italy, but I have always found myself looking out at the rest of the world and wanting to be part of it. Where it concerns translation, it may as well have been as soon as I learned to speak that I nurtured a powerful curiosity in language; be it spoken or written.
